Another Reason to Get Enough Sleep - Not Doing So Could Be Deadly

Not too long ago, I decided that I was going to get more sleep at night. From an energy standpoint, I feel so much better now that I am trying to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

A British study released today has shown that

“People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease”

Very interesting. Something they also noted is that when you sleep more than 9 hours a night, your mortality rate also increases:

“The correlation with cardiovascular risk in those who slept less in the 1990s than in the 1980s was clear but, curiously, there was also a higher mortality rate in people who increased their sleeping to more than nine hours.”

In cases where people sleep longer, they believe that depression and cancer related fatigue is related to the higher mortality.

Yet another reason to keep aiming to be in bed by 11 pm each night. So far, I’ve been doing pretty good with it especially during the week.

Note that a rule for not sleeping more than 9 hours should not apply to children or teenagers, who may need more sleep while they are growing.

I never really noticed this but sleep is way more important than just for weight loss and energy but to your health. When you don’t get enough sleep your body is being drained and drained and nothing is being put into it to bring it back up.

Wow, did not know about the risks associated with sleeping too much. Good post.

I think I’m optimal with 7 hours sleep.

i have been bad at it. i do get my 8 hours though, its just that i go to bed really late.

I probably get about 4-5 hours a night during the week. It’s not easy being a night owl when you have to get up for work at 4:30. I’ve been working on it, though, and I’ve seen some improvement.

I’ve also read somewhere (sorry can’t remember where) that your brain does most of it’s “maintenance” tasks between 11pm and 2am, so being asleep at these times is critical. As someone that used to go to bed consistently at midnight, I’ve found I feel a lot better if I’m asleep at 10, even if I have to get up at 4 or 5 in the morning.
