Body: Let’s Try Jogging…Brain: Yeah, Right!

After dinner, the whole family decided to go for a walk. Things started off slow, but then I started to pick up the pace. Even my husband commented that I was power walking and maybe I was just a little bit.

Then all of a sudden, I had the urge to jog. Here’s sort of how it went down:

Body: This walking feels good. I got an idea…let’s pick up the pace a little.

Brain: You kidding? You don’t jog. You can’t jog.

Body: But this feels really good. You have to trust me on this one. Doesn’t it feel good to feel the blood pumping through your body?

Brain: Well…yes. But you haven’t jogged in ages. We’re talking about years here.

Body: So what?

Brain: What? You want to collapse of a heart attack right here right now?

Body: You won’t die. Trust me on this. You need to push a little harder. You are doing just fine with walking at this pace and I know you can handle jogging if only for a few seconds. Let’s do it!

Brain: I guess we could stop at any time.

Body: Exactly. You with me here?

Brain: Ok. Let’s do it.

(I actually started jogging)

Body: See? What did I tell you?

Brain: Oh my…this does feel good. But someone is going to see a fat girl jogging.

Body: Who cares! Feel that heart pumping? Feel the rush? Mmmm…I love it.

Brain: Yeah, it does feel really good.

Body: Hey…you haven’t stopped us yet.

Brain: Wow. You’re right. I haven’t. This feels pretty darn good.

Body: Ok. We better stop for now and walk for a little bit. Don’t want to overdo it since we don’t have good shoes on.

Brain: Good call. Blaine is gonna kill us if we don’t get good shoes. Let’s walk.

(went back to a walking pace)

So there you have it. I actually jogged today! It wasn’t anything major. I’d say that I went maybe 100 yards the first time and then I also did it again a little bit later for about 100 yards. It felt so darn good.

Because we are on a budget, I am going to have to set aside some money to buy some really good shoes. The cheap $20 pair that I have from the department store probably is not going to cut it. I’ll have to check out a few stores to try to find a good deal and a great fit. Once I get shoes, I definitely think that walking/jogging is something I would like to do. I can just imagine doing it in the morning with the birds chirping and the crisp air hitting my skin.

I might change my mind in the morning pending any sore muscles. But I made sure to stretch when we got home and so far so good. I even wanted to go grocery shopping 1/2 hour later. That is something that is not within the norm for me. After work I never feel like shopping. I ended up having so much energy that it was amazing.

I feel like I discovered a little secret! I like it!

Awesome girl! Keep it up! With everyday that you make up your mind to take care of your body, the easier all of this will come. You deserve to be healthy, keep your eyes on the prize :)

Ha, too funny!

I had a friend in college that tried using cheap shoes to save money, but they fell apart the first time that it rained.

One of the things that I miss about not being in shape is how easy it is to get a good rush out of a workout! I’m glad that you were able to get it on your first jog; I hope that it encourages you to keep mixing it in on your walks.

Congrats on the jog! The first time back is always the hardest. Keep it up, and shop around. You can find decent shoes that aren’t too expensive.

That’s an awesome story and very inspiring!

Yay! Way to go! I lurk but I was motivated to post. If there is one thing I’ve learned in my short life, it’s that you shouldn’t skimp on running shoes. I was on a budget and went to a reebok outlet store and got a really good pair for around $50. Your body will definitely thank you and you’ll be able to work out longer and more efficively if you’re not in pain or constantly trying to compensate for ill-fitting or worn out shoes.

Another idea for saving on shoes - you could go to a local sports store and try on a bunch of pairs, write down the style names and sizes that fit, and then search on overstock.com, half.com, and even ebay! I have done this with clothes that I wanted but didn’t want to splurge on ;) Takes extra time and work, but it is worth it when you find what you wanted for a nice discount.

That’s awesome! What an exciting sign of health!
If you do decide you need shoes, you can actually get perfectly good athletic shoes online or at an outlet store for around $30 (that used to be $60-90). But for now, your current shoes are probably fine for light jogging.

Good for you! You definitely don’t want to start jogging with bad shoes and on pavement, especially if you’re a bit overweight. I did that and the pain made me never want to run again.

Good luck with your newly found exercise :)

On a financial note…
I disagree with the post above about needing to have amazing running shoes. Yes, that’s true when you do major running (like several miles a day or a marathon) that is very taxing on the body. However, normal athletic shoes (probably like what the blogger already has) will suffice for low-level jogging and infrequent runs - basically the normal amount of activity that someone who is not in great shape does. Average gym shoes will usually do just fine. I have a family member who used to work for a major athletic shoe company, and based on his inside knowledge, I can assure you that regular people don’t need super fancy shoes and that shoes aren’t necessarily a ton better just because they cost more. After all, a decade or two ago there was no such thing as “air” or all of the other features we currently have in our running/workout shoes, and yet people managed to go running and do other exercise just fine. It’s funny how we get used to new technology or newly marketed items until we make the assumption that we now “need” it.

Good for you! I hate jogging and decided I don’t have to do it if I don’t like it. But I walk like nobody’s business, and I lost many pounds doing it, so it’s okay. But if you’ve found you “like it”, awesome girl! Keep it up, next time, try for 200 yards!
