Childhood Obesity Could Be Influenced By Your Father’s Parenting Style

Flipping through pictures of me through the years, my weight appeared normal up until the first grade. Then my cheeks were getting a little bigger and my waistline was getting bigger. There’s one picture in particular that I never have a hard time remembering. I’m probably about 7 or 8 and I’m wearing short shorts and a short top. You can clearly see a fat roll around my midriff.

There’s an article on Yahoo that shares the result of research that suggests that your father’s parenting style influences childhood obesity.

“The researchers found that fathers with permissive (no limits on their children) or disengaged parenting styles were more likely to have overweight or obese children, while fathers with a consistent (clear limits, following through with instructions, etc.) style were less likely to have children with a higher body mass index (BMI).”

I wouldn’t say my dad was permissive. I can clearly remember the fear of never doing anything wrong because I would have to face dad when he came home from work. I think if we should learn anything from this is that the whole family should take a part in living an active, healthy life.
