Frustrated…Yet Again
Last month, I was frustrated because I kept getting injured while trying to be more active. The frustration has reared it’s ugly head again.
Yesterday we went and did a little bit of hiking at a historical site in the area. I took things easy and took plenty of rests when needed. We were walking down a hill and were very close to reaching our car when my foot slipped on some rocks on the pavement. I didn’t fall, but I felt my right knee pop (that’s the foot that slipped). In hindsight, my foot was in the wrong place at the wrong time and that was that.
Today my knee hurts when I walk and it feels very unstable. Hopefully the pain will go away soon. In the meantime, I think I may go to the store and get a knee brace since my right knee has been giving me problems.
Deep down, I am hoping beyong hope that all of these injuries will decline once I lose weight. I look at my weight as the source of many of my problems and I should be realistic and realize that maybe not all of my problems are weight related. But I can’t help but hope that they are.

Oh boy, you better be careful. I hope you didn’t hurt anything too bad.
My doc said if it is a sprain - work it. If it is a break come in.
Do you think you broke anything? tore anything? You might want to visit the doc.
Be sure to ice it down for 5-10 minutes morning and night. This will decrease the inflammation in the tissue surrounding the sprain/strain.
Tricia, are you warming up properly and then stretching afterwards? All of this can be avoided with the proper start-up routine! Don’t excuse all these injuries on your weight - these are directly related to your improper warmup routines… I played basketball throughout HS and college and our trainer (certified) pressed this SO MUCH!
Tricia, I understand the exercise rut. I was so bummed out about breaking my wrist at the gym while doing what the trainer told me to do, I stopped exercising for a while. Dr wasn’t thrilled–said my legs are working so I am going to gym today to see what I can do. I also let my eating plan go by the wayside and I know I gained (sigh) Excuse was I can’t even work the electric can opener. (so I ate junk) not my vegetarian low fat food plan.
Does ice help the pain in your knee? also anti inflammatory ie Aleve?
best of luck for quick healing and out of rut when it’s safe to use your knee again
Make sure to ice your knee and an anti-inflamatory of some kind. If it doesn’t feel better, think about going to a doctor.
Tricia,
Your weight very well may have a lot to do with why you are getting hurt so easily, but it doesn’t mean that you can just ignore the injuries. As everybody has been stating here, start out slow to warm up, do a little gentle stretching after you warm up (if you want to) and always do some gentle stretching after any sort of physical activity.
Also, go to a specialty running store and have them check your shoes. Constant knee pain is probably being caused by your feet and the way that you walk, which can be corrected by using shoes that are appropriate for your activity and your body type.
As for what you should do now, you should use the “RID” or “RICE” methods for treating your knee. Rest, ice, drugs, compression, and/or elevation.
FYI, I have far less joint pain since I dropped 40 lbs. While your situation could be more than a joint pain issue, it stands to reason that there will be a lot less stress on your bones, joints and ligaments if they have to haul around less weight, and that would likely lead to fewer injuries.
Stretch, stretch, stretch before working out!
Also, I think you’ve now mentioned a couple of injuries on hikes. Maybe you can find a big stick in your yard to use as a hiking stick next time.
Ugh. I wrote a long comment and then I accidentially closed the window!
It’s getting late, so I’ll sum up what I wrote.
My husband reminded me last night of something. I injured a knee as a teen pretty badly (it had to do with jumping off a bridge - crazy teen story). In any case, I hit something fairly hard and had to have three stiches in my right knee because I split it open. It’s healed now, but perhaps something from way back when was jumbled in there. The small town doc didn’t even do x-rays of my knee. He just sewed me up!
As for the stretching, I have been doing a few stretches before exercising on my elliptical. I haven’t been that good at doing it before hiking so I have to be more dilligent with that. I also need to learn some good stretching exercises.
Blaine - you bring up a good point about shoes. I have had problems with my feet since I was born. I even had to wear those shoes with a bar between them when sleeping when I was a toddler. With our financial situation, it is difficult to spend the money on a good pair of shoes when I can get a pair of Dr. Sholls for $15. I probably should save up some money for a good pair.
Kristina - I have to chuckle. I do use a stick for hiking but it is mostly for me to feel a little safer while walking. We have bears and lots of critters. I did not, however, have a stick with me when I was injured this time. I also didn’t have a stick the other time I hurt my knee. Hmm…you may be onto something.
Overall, my knee feels a lot better today. I’m thinking that tomorrow it should good enough to start exercising again. This injury was not as severe as the last one.
