Good News for Chocolate Lovers - Dark Chocolate May Reduce Your Blood Pressure

For all of you out there that like chocolate, there’s an article on Yahoo.com that should make your sweet tooth happy!

Here’s some good and bad news for chocoholics: Dark chocolate seems to lower blood pressure, but it requires an amount less than two Hershey’s Kisses to do it, a small study suggests.

While I do need to lower my blood pressure, I won’t be eating chocolate for the health benefits that it may have. I actually do not like pure chocolate. The only time I can eat chocolate is if it is with something else like peanut butter. Thinking of eating pure chocolate (like a Hershey’s bar or a Hershey’s Kiss) makes my stomach ache. I can thank my childhood for that.

One Easter when I was about 8 or 9, I ate a huge chocolate bunny as well as about 6 blueberry donuts. Needless to say, I became very ill. As a result I do not like pure chocolate and I have yet to have any bakery with blueberries in it. I can eat raw or dried blueberries (although it took some time to be able to do that).

I’ve always looked at my aversion to chocolate as a good thing :)

Tricia,

An aversion to chocolate is never a bad thing, particularly in the desire to loose weight. I have never much cared for chocolate or sweets for that matter. A few times a year I get a sweet tooth and go on a short binge for an afternoon but outside of that I just don’t eat sweets. I’ve never considered that to be a flaw.

Since I lost weight, my blood pressure has been normal. I also exercise more and try to stick to no more than 1-2 servings of caffeine per day. Not sure if this works, but I always thought my elevated blood pressure was due to stress, which I think the caffeine contributes to. And the exercise helps alleviate it. I’m certainly no doc though. Also, I LOVE dark chocolate, but I simply can’t limit myself to the equivalent of two hershey’s kisses per day - a girl has limits! I’d rather abstain altogether, except for special occasions ; )

Try schokinag - it’s a chocolate-drink mix. Never sweet (even their triple chocolate is quite dark-ish). I usually make it by boiling the morsels in 2% or even skim and you won’t believe how decadent it is. For a real treat, try whole or half-n-half.

Just Google Schokinag - you’ll get a link to buy some. It’s similar to chocolate in Europe because it’s pure chocolate with some cocoa powder to keep the morsels from sticking. Saw it on food network, tried it, LOVVVEEEE it.
