Losing Weight is a Lot Like Losing Debt
Mighty Bargain Hunter took one of my articles about keeping motivated to reduce debt and drew from it some things that he thought were important when it came to losing weight.
Losing Debt is Like Losing Weight
They really are both a lot alike
- Both require making lifestyle changes
- Both require a certain degree of motivation to keep the progress moving along.
- Both require that you pay attention to the small details
Now that I am on our way to reducing our debt, I am ready to make the committment to make my weight loss a reality. Not just a weight loss, a healthier lifestyle that will ensure I’m here for many more years to come. I’m not sure why I decided to tackle our debt before I tackled my weight, but perhaps I’m not alone with what I did.
An interesting tidbit from Bankrate.com:
More People Are Worried About Losing Debt Than Weight: “In the battle of the New Year’s resolutions, the dollar beats the pounds. People are more interested in paring the dough they owe than the flab on their abs, according to a Roper Poll commissioned by Bankrate.com.” [via Bankrate.com]
That poll was back in 2003, so I wonder if the outcome would be different if it was done today. From my experience and from reading other financial bloggers I think debt would win out losing weight again, but I could be wrong.
Part of me is concerned about trying to tackle debt and my weight at once. Blogging about my weight has always been in the back of my mind after I started Blogging Away Debt. I didn’t do it back then because I wasn’t sure I could do it. Perhaps I needed the push I received last month. Maybe I needed that reality check because life isn’t all about money.
At any rate, I’m committed now so there is no going back.
I think about having to confess at Blogging Away Debt whenever I overspend and now I think about having to confess on here when I overeat ![]()

Hi! I found this from your debt site! I’ve realized for a while that extra weight is similiar to debt. We gain when we eat more than our body needs, right? We gain debt when we spend more than we have. Both involve “spending” something that we don’t have to spend - whether it be money or eating something.
Most of my excuses were blown out of the water when I began to think of eating this way. I really just need to live within my means.
