Obesity Map of the United States

I found a neat interactive map of the United States that shows obesity from 1985 to 2006. As you watch the display, you can see how the percentage of those who are obese has increased.

CNN Obesity Map

Michigan (where I live) is one of the red states. That means that over 25% of its residents are obese.

Watching the map progress throughout the years, the trend is very eye opening. While I question the methods used to obtain the data (I’m always skeptical of studies and such), I do believe that obesity is a major problem.

I’m surprised that Maine isn’t a red state…I guess that we are too liberal to be termed a red state under any circumstances…heheh.

I bet it’s actually worse than the map shows.

Blaine - Hmm…maybe blue and red were not good choices of color LOL.

damn, that was not cool at all. obesity is a major issue in the USA.

Wow that is scary stuff. What will it look like in another 20 years?

Apparently the obesity rates are very similar here in Canada.

What can we do to change this?

Wow - we all know America is becoming more obese, but to see a map like that - really puts it out there, no pun intended. I find the trend interesting - how increases start in the ‘center’ of the country & move outwards.

Is there an article accompanying this interactive map? Like you, I’ve learned to become skeptical of studies, mostly because you really need to know how the study was performed & what data they used for analysis & how the analysis came to be. Anyone can skew results, based on which data they choose to use & how they report it. For example, it would be interesting to learn what the human migratory patterns are and how they may have affected the data. For example, many years ago, the Rocky States had an influx of migration, mostly from the Western States - how did this affect the obese pattern of both the Rocky States (migrating in) and the Western States (migrating out).

If the map goes with an article, please provide a link to the article. Thank you :)

Maria - I came across this map a while ago, and had it bookmarked. I can’t remember how I got to it. I don’t really see a story that goes with it. It looks to be a part of CNN’s Fit Nation series.
