Sometimes Your Scale Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

If there is one thing that I have learned so far in this journey, it is that my weight loves to jump all over the place. One week I lost 6 pounds. Another week I gained 9 pounds. It zig zags around more than a firefly.

As a result, I haven’t been as diligent with weighing myself daily. I still will weight myself each and every Sunday for a weekly progress report. But other than that, if I think about hopping on the scale in the morning I’ll weigh myself. If not, no biggie. Weekly weighing is what I am going to do.

Now, that doesn’t mean that I won’t notice something like I did the other day…

I purchased a belt from the local thrift shop back in May. The button on my one pair of pants popped off and since I only have two pairs of jeans right now I wasn’t going to give in and buy a new pair just yet. I was able to find only one belt that would barely fit me. I was able to buckle it using the first hole and it kept my pants together so it was working.

When we don’t go anywhere, I usually lounge around the house in sweats, shorts or my pajamas. It’s comfy that way and I’m pretty sure it’s old news for the neighbors to see me in the yard with my kitty cat flannel pajama bottoms and a T-shirt. Leaving our yard is a different story so when I need a pair of jeans, I usually grab the pair that still has the button.

They were being washed the other day so I had to wear the button-less pair. I put the belt on and threaded it through the belt loops and was getting ready to suck in all the air I could and then I looked down.

I was going past the first hole…then the second…third…let out the air I just sucked in…fourth…fifth…

I couldn’t believe it. If there was a sixth hole I could have buckled my belt right there comfortably. It’s hard to describe how I felt, but I can tell you that it felt better than the one time my total weight loss tally was at 22 pounds. I could feel the corners of my mouth heading upward and I let out a little happy chuckle as I situated the belt in the fifth hole and had room to spare.

My experience with my belt is showing me that I am making a big difference with what I am doing here. More so than any numbers could ever tell me.

Awesome! way to go Trish!

That is so incredibly awesome. Congratulations!

Great story!

I’ve had belt problems as well, but they were a different nature. My latest is that my belt keeps falling apart on me as I walk around, which can prove interesting.

Have you ever thought about sewing a new button back onto your jeans?

Good for you! Being healthy is not just about weightloss. Heck, you can actually put on weight and still be healthier, as long as it’s muscle.

I still remember the first time I went shopping for jeans after losing weight. I picked up my usual waist size, tried them on and they just fell off! Never felt better :)

Thank you everyone!

Blaine - Well, the button popped off for a reason (I have a habit of wearing too tight of jeans). I didn’t even think of trying to sew one back on because the extra breathing room was a little welcome. However, I could probably sew one on now with now problem :)

Congratulations! What an awesome feeling that had to of been! I’ve noticed during my journey that even when the scale said I hadn’t lost that I was losing inches because of the way my clothes were fitting.

My doctor even recommended that I throw my scale away because I was getting to hung up on the numbers instead of going by how I was feeling.

Awesome! Now I’d recommend one small change: stop lounging in sweats and jammies at home. Not because of the way they look, but because you may be tempted to eat more when you’re wearing elastic-waist pants that stretch. I usually try to wear snug clothing out to dinner, Thanksgiving, etc., as an incentive not to overeat - it’s just plain uncomfortable to stuff yourself when you’re bursting at the seams!
