Top Ten Happy Foods to Boost Your Mood

I think all of us could use a little more happiness in our lives. According to an article on Yahoo (Top Ten Happy Foods), controlling your blood sugar can help you have a better mood and they give some suggestions:

Wild salmon
Spinach
Skim milk
Ground flaxseeds
Blackberries
Omega 3 fortified eggs
Sardines
Soybeans
Beans
Brussels sprouts

Out of that list, the only one I would eat no questions asked are the blackberries. I am a fruit fanatic so that food is not a problem. I can also handle the skim milk, although I suffer from mild lactose intolerance. Drinking a glass of milk is not something I would do, but I do have milk with cereal or in recipies.

I’m not even sure what the omega 3 fortified eggs are. I eat and enjoy regular eggs so I’ll have to look into that one more. I’d be curious how much they cost compared to regular eggs.

So, two (possibly 3) out of 10 are foods that I would eat. Oh, wait, they threw in one more for good luck:

Sunflower seeds

Yay! I like sunflower seeds. So now I have possibly four foods to munch on when I want my mood to improve. At some point, I could try the other foods but not the brussels sprouts. I’ve shucked my share of brussels sprouts as a kid and I am very aware of the smell of them cooking (my mom eats them). If I remember correctly, they also do a doozy on your digestive system :P

I’ve had doctors tell me that consuming Omega 3 fatty acids is good - so maybe that’s what the fortified eggs are all about?

But you can get Omega 3 fatty acids from fish. Or in capsules (check the vitamin aisle). Don’t let the “fatty” part throw you off!

Yup Omega 3 is good for you. You can find it in fish and nuts among other things. It can help lower your triglyceride levels, prevent fatal heart attacks if you have a history, and lower your blood pressure.

Here is an article from Mayo Clinic you might find helpful. The dosing section is particularly helpful because it tells you what you numbers you should look for when buying Omega 3 (aka Fish Oil) and if you choose to obtain your omega 3 via eating, what you should eat and how much. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fish-oil/NS_patient-fishoil#31C2AC9C-E7FF-0DBD-14239E5B10600216

Also, if you decide to start taking it via oral capsule I would at least call your pharmacist if you are on any other medications just to make sure there isn’t any drug interactions and to see if there is a particular time of the day you should take it for best results.

Why isn’t dark chocolate on that list?

Beans are great food once you’ve learned how to cook nice things with them.

OMG! I *Love* brussels sprouts! :)

I’m pretty much with you, but I’ll add beans to the list of foods I eat.

You probably won’t like the price of the Omega 3 fortified eggs. I don’t know if it’s cheaper, but I get my Omega 3 from fish oil pills.

The only one I’m not crazy about on that list is brussel sprouts but they are my 6 year old’s favorite vegetable so I always try to eat a few when we have them. It’s a good thing she likes the rest of the list as well.

Hi—-As a vegetarian, i dont do the salmon or sardines, but the veggies and the rest of the items on yahoo’s list are power foods you should definitely try to incorporate in your daily diet through salads, cereals, dinner entrees, and a host of other creative ways. Good list and i’m smiling already. (lol)

[...] Fatty Acids - I first heard of this fat when I read an article about the top ten happy foods to boost your mood. It’s another “good” fat that can help lower your bad cholesterol and possibly [...]
