Weekly Weight Loss Progress: 11 Pounds Lost!
This morning I did my weekly weigh in and I was very pleased to see that I lost an additional 2 lbs. That brings my total weight lost to 11 lbs!! Yay!
I am very surprised that I still am averaging around 2 lbs a week even though I’m not exercising that much lately. Ok, really not at all since my back injury. It feels better now, but this weekend was rainy and miserable so hiking was out of the question.
That’s still no excuse because I have an elliptical upstairs in my office. I also brought a small TV with a DVD player in there so I can pop in one of the few movies we have (we only own four - not counting my son’s) and watch that while working out. I even bought some workout clothing at the local thrift store.
I have everything I need, except for the motivation to go up there and just do it!
Motivation to exercise…sounds like a good thing to research and discuss next

Find a way in which better fitness (and lower weight) will improve your life. Then, keep reminding yourself of that reason when you need motivation. For me, I need to lose a bit more weight so that I can control my sleep apnea and snoring. So I remind myself how important this is for me and for my fiance whenever I need motivation.
Also, try to workout at the same time every day, you may even want to put it on your calendar. That way you know when you need to go and for how long. It reduces the “well, I’m busy now so I won’t workout” issues.

Hi Tricia,
Congrats on your blogging away initiative! I found your site because of a Mayo Clinic link within a post. I recently stareed my own self-transformation blog … all driven by an ugly trip to the Mayo Clinic about a year ago. I have lost 75 pounds and rid myself of a terrible allergic condition in the process. You might find the content interesting. I will check back often to see how you are progressing. Keep it up!
Regards,
Josh
Congratulations! I just started my own weight loss blog too. I hope to have some of the success that you have had…
hey trish! why don’t you give kickboxing a try? kinda like shadow-boxing. throw a few punches in the air and pretend you’re hitting an opponent in the face. i like to do this while i’m watching tv. i also view it from the perspective that it’ll come in handy as a self defense mechanism (i’m from NYC, and yes, guys have tried to follow me home before), which gives me extra motivation to stick with kickboxing as a workout.
On the exercise, just DO it. I know it’s hard to find the motivation some days, but once you start, you get momentum. Start small, if necessary - maybe just 5 or 10 minutes on the elliptical, then challenge yourself to do an extra couple minutes, and so it goes. Also, something that helped me was to actually write it in my calendar or planner: “exercise 4 p.m.” or whatever. That way, you can schedule it out to equal your desired number of workouts per week. Good luck, you’re doing GREAT!
Hi Tricia,
If you are going to write about motivation and working out, psychology is an interesting way to go. A friend of mine told me a story she learned in a fashion course of all places… This guy’s goal was to go running everyday. But he couldn’t always get motivated to go. So someone asked him, ‘When have you made up your mind to go running?’ And he said, ‘When I get my shoes on.’ So they said, ‘Your new goal isn’t to go running everyday, but to put on your shoes.’ I guess it worked and the guy started going everyday
Congrats by the way, and keep up the good work.
Thank you everyone for the congrats and the words of support. I have exercised on Monday and Tuesday (yay!) but ended up running out of time for today. Nothing too big…only 12 minutes and 8 minutes. But by golly…it’s a start! ![]()
OK, I promise I’m not saying this to be negative - this is a positive thing! I just got here from your other blog and since this post was a few days ago, I think you called the car breaking down thing into your life! You asked for motivation to exercise, and a higher power gave you a huge motivation! ![]()
I think that’s called the Law of Attraction, your wish got answered, though I’m sure not in the way you expected!

Congratulations!
I know it’s hard to find the motivation to exercise - I’ve struggled with that, too. Here’s an attempt to help motivate you: your weight loss will slow soon if you don’t start exercising. When one goes on a diet, the weight comes off quickly at first. The body is in shock, there’s water weight, it’s easier to lose when you weigh more, etc. Eventually, your body will become accustomed to your “diet” and your metabolism will slow down to match your lower intake of calories. Exercise is the best way to combat this. It increases your metabolism. So, in addition to the short-term benefits of immediately burning calories, you get the long-term benefit of a faster metabolism to burn more calories at all times (plus a million other health benefits).
You might also try setting rules for yourself. For example, once I placed my treadmill in front of the TV and only allowed myself to watch TV while walking/running on the treadmill. That way you’re doing two things at once and the workout goes by faster. You can also use music. And you can have your husband be your “accountability partner”…make it his job to help get you on that exercise equipment each day!
